Since 1982, at the request of Mr. Yehan Numata, Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai (the Society for the Promotion of Buddhism) has been engaged in producing an English version of the Taisho Buddhist Tripitaka Canon, which was written in Chinese. The 100 volumes of the Taisho Tripitaka Canon were compiled and published by Japanese Buddhists working together during the Taisho and Showa periods of the early and mid-twentieth century. It consists of 11,970 fascicles of 3,360 texts of sutras (sermons preached by the Buddha), precepts (rules governing the order), treatises (sutra commentaries and doctrines), and annotations (interpretations).
The aim of this project is to translate the entire Taisho Tripitaka Canon into English, but for the first phase, we selected and translated 139 works, which is about one tenth of the total number of texts. We continue to make public the data materials translated into English.

In order for people from around the world to be able to view the English Tripitaka, Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai (BDK) is posting the English texts on the internet as well as publishing them in books. We are also promoting projects to make public the “BDK Tripitaka Text Database” in collaboration with the Tripitaka Text Database Study Center (SAT). Here you can use the results of the Tripitaka English translation project through the internet. You can not only view sections of the English translations, but you can also compare the English translations with the Taisho Buddhist Tripitaka Canon on a sentence-by-sentence basis and refer to the Buddhist Digital Dictionary.
